Our Doral dentists consistently treat oral injuries that could have easily been prevented by wearing a mouth guard. In fact, one study showed that 75 percent of high school injuries occurred in students who were not wearing a guard.

That is so many injuries, painful days and visits to the dentist that could have spared.

What is a mouthguard?

A mouth guard is a protective device (usually plastic or laminate) that covers the teeth and gums. It is worn in contact and high-impact sports to protect the teeth, arches, lips, gums, and jaw.

Types of dental injuries that mouth guards protect against:

  • Chipped teeth
  • Broken teeth
  • Fractured crowns
  • Fractured bridgework
  • Lip injuries (especially in athletes with braces)
  • Cheek injuries
  • Jaw fractures
  • Concussions
  • Injured tongues
  • TMD

Important Uses of Custom Impact Mouthguards:

  • Protect against concussion. Creating a custom mold with your dentist can prevent serious injuries, including brain injury and concussion.
  • Protect the mouth during correction with braces. An impact to the face can cause immediate and lingering pain when a patient has braces. A custom mouth guard can be fitted to rest comfortably over the brackets and in the mouth.
  • Protect against chipped and broken teeth. Chipped and broken teeth are some of the most common sports-related injuries and two of the easiest to avoid by simply wearing a guard.

If you play contact or high-impact sports, don’t overlook your need for a mouth guard! It is definitely worth it to invest in a guard and wear one to prevent an injury to the teeth, mouth, and jaw.
