What are dental caries? Ah, astute observation of new jargon. Dental caries is another word for tooth decay or cavities.

Tooth decay usually begins and evolves in its earliest stages without being noticed by the patient. Plaque on the teeth uses sugars- thru food and beverage- to make an acid that dissolves the surface level of your teeth- the enamel.

It continues to work through until it makes its way through several layers, remaining unnoticed until it hits nerve endings. Now you feel pain or sensitivity to hot, cold, sweet or sour foods.

When this type of decay has damaged teeth, fillings should be used to restore the affected area. The proper filling will be selected for the repair you need, and the filling helps prevent any further decay.

If your dentist suggests you need tooth decay treatment (fillings), it’s best to get them immediately to aid in cavity protection.
